Fungus and mold are commonly found in homes or buildings that have sustained water intrusion due to flooding, broken pipes, roof leaks, sewage backups, condensation, humidity, etc.  High moisture levels trapped in certain building materials promote ideal conditions for mold growth. Mold spores are found everywhere: in the soil, plants and airborne dust and are introduced by common airspace along with flood waters. However, they thrive well on moist paper products, drywall, wallpaper, ceiling tiles, carpets, coverings on insulated pipes, insulation material on wood, and on organic debris.

Untreated water-damaged material allows mold to proliferate. After a significant water event, mold spores can begin to germinate in as little as 12 hours and colonized in 48 to 72 hours. Exposure to mold by building occupants can potentially cause a myriad of health problems due to mycotoxins released by the spores as well as by other fungal fragments. The following are some symptoms that may be caused by mold exposure:  chronic coughing, fatigue, chest congestion, and allergies. Some people experience hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a condition similar to viral infection with symptoms such as chills, fever, weakness, muscle pains, cough, and shortness of breath.
